Redefine Retirement with Kim Watty’s Wisdom

Hello ,

Welcome to this week’s Wisepreneurs Weekly Newsletter, where I aim to empower you to redefine work as a vibrant, purpose-driven pursuit.

I’ve often shied away from the word empowerment due to its buzzword status, but here I'm using it to mean equipping you with actionable tools, deep insights, and confidence to shape your next chapter with purpose.

Through context-specific resources and networked collaboration—teaming up through dynamic relationships and technology to share knowledge, spark ideas, and achieve goals together—I'm hoping to enable you to overcome obstacles and thrive as independent entrepreneurs.

I’m also clarifying the five key areas that I now use in the Wisepreneurs Podcast and website, guided by networked cognition: collaborating in a vibrant web of relationships where intelligence lives not in one mind but in shared insights, distributed problem-solving, and technology, amplifying collective wisdom to learn smarter and achieve more together.

At Wisepreneurs, my intention is to guide you through these five pillars to thrive in work and life after 60:

  1. Networked Entrepreneurship: Build a business or project by connecting with others for support, ideas, and collaboration, making your ventures stronger through shared wisdom.
  2. Relational Branding & Thought Leadership: Share your expertise and story authentically to attract clients and opportunities, establishing yourself as a trusted voice.
  3. AI-Augmented Work: Use simple, smart tools like AI to streamline tasks, save time, and boost productivity, so you can focus on what matters most.
  4. Cognitive Vitality & Longevity: Stay sharp and energised through learning, reflection, and wellness practices, ensuring you thrive for years to come.
  5. Resilient Transitions & Support: Navigate career or life changes with confidence, supported by a community and resources to help you adapt and grow.

These pillars work together to empower you with the tools, connections, and mindset to create a fulfilling, purpose-driven future.

Last Friday, I released episode 87 of the Wisepreneurs podcast featuring Kim Watty, who’s reshaping retirement through intention and community.
  • This Friday week on May 23, I’m thrilled to bring back Tomáš Baránek, a Czech publisher and knowledge management expert, to continue exploring his publishing, and his thoughts on AI and cognitive vitality.

I'll now explore how their stories align with my mission to foster networked entrepreneurship, relational branding, AI-augmented work, cognitive vitality, and resilient transitions.

Redesigning Retirement with Kim Watty: Purpose, Community, and Action

In my latest podcast, Redesigning Retirement: Kim Watty on Purpose and Community, Kim Watty, a 66-year-old Emeritus Professor of Accounting, shares her journey from academia to co-founding The Main Act with her daughter, Prue.

This mother-daughter venture supports women in designing their “next best chapter” with intention, starting with a focus on retirement. Kim’s story is a masterclass in leveraging crystallised intelligence—deep, tacit knowledge gained through experience—to create a purpose-driven business.

Kim’s Story in the Wisepreneurs Framework

Networked Entrepreneurship: Kim’s business, The Main Act, thrives on relational capital. By partnering with her entrepreneurial daughter, she’s built a cooperative workflow that blends academic rigour with creative innovation.

Their Retirement by Design program, an 8-week course based on Stanford’s life design methodology, fosters a networked community where women collaborate to navigate transitions. Kim’s careful selection of participants ensures a curious, action-oriented cohort, amplifying collective growth.

Relational Branding & Thought Leadership: Kim embodies thought leadership by living her mission. Her daily swims in Port Melbourne’s bay, sans wetsuit, symbolize resilience and authenticity. Through media appearances (e.g., ABC Radio National) and articles, she’s building a relational brand that resonates with women seeking purpose. Her story challenges stereotypes of retirement as isolation, positioning it as a vibrant entrepreneurial phase.

Cognitive Vitality & Longevity: Kim’s commitment to learning—journaling, yoga, and reading books like Ikigai and The 5 AM Club—reflects a longevity mindset. She emphasises cognitive vitality through curiosity-driven learning, encouraging women to ask, “What brings you joy?” This aligns with our focus on neuroplasticity and productive practice, ensuring mental agility in later life.

Resilient Transitions & Support: Kim’s transition from academia to entrepreneurship was sparked by a visceral feeling of “something more.” Despite personal challenges, including her husband’s passing, she’s built resilience through community and purpose. The Main Act’s accountability calls and small cohort model provide environmental scaffolding, helping women navigate retirement with confidence.

AI-Augmented Work: While Kim doesn’t directly use AI, her business leverages technology (e.g., Xero for accounting) to streamline operations, freeing her to focus on high-impact activities like business development. This meta-effective approach demonstrates how technology can support entrepreneurial ventures without overwhelming users.

Practical Takeaways from Kim

  • Start Small, Stay Curious: Kim’s pilot program in January taught her to refine her offering with accountability calls. Begin your venture with a low-risk experiment, like a side project, and iterate based on feedback. Build Your Network: Connect with like-minded women through local meetups or online platforms (e.g., LinkedIn groups) to foster relational capital and spark collaboration.
  • Prioritize Joy: Reflect on what brings you joy using a journal. Try Kim’s approach: ask, “How do I play?” to uncover purpose-driven activities.
  • Learn Continuously: Read one non-fiction book this month (e.g., Ikigai) to stimulate cognitive vitality. Use tools like Readwise to capture insights.

Kim’s story reminds us that retirement isn’t an endpoint but a launchpad for networked entrepreneurship. Visit The Main Act or email Kim at kim@themainact.com.au to learn more about her Retirement by Design program.

Coming Up: Tomáš Baránek on Publishing, AI, and Cognitive Agility

To be released on Friday, May 23, I’m welcoming back Tomáš Baránek, a Czech publisher, entrepreneur, and self-described “life hacker,” for his second appearance on the Wisepreneurs Podcast.

Tomáš, who first joined me in Episode 41: Publishing, Knowledge Management, and Well-Being in the Digital Age, runs a mid-sized publishing house in Brno, Czech Republic.

His company curates (and translates into Czech) transformative non-fiction, from Yuval Noah Harari’s Nexus to David Grann’s The Wager, for a readership hungry for depth.

At 53, Tomáš has gone back to his alma mater to study machine learning so as to get a better understanding of AI’s “black box,” reflecting his commitment to cognitive vitality.

What to Expect from Tomáš

Tomáš’s episode will explore how publishing serves as a vehicle for networked cognition, delivering curated knowledge to shape readers’ futures. Networked cognition means collaborating in a vibrant web of relationships where intelligence lives not in one mind but in shared insights, distributed problem-solving, and technology, amplifying collective wisdom to help us learn smarter and achieve more together.

He’ll discuss:

  • Curating for Impact: How his publishing house selects books that solve problems, from health (Outlive by Peter Attia) to history (Nexus), fostering meta-effective learning (using knowledge to improve our own effectiveness).
  • AI’s Promise and Perils: Tomáš’s skepticism about AI translation and its hallucination risks highlights the need for critical thinking in AI-augmented work.
  • Cognitive Agility: His return to university at 53 to study machine learning exemplifies curiosity-driven learning, a cornerstone of longevity.
  • Historical Context: Books like The Wager connect past lessons to modern challenges, encouraging resilient transitions through reflective abstraction.

Tomáš in the Wisepreneurs Framework

  • Networked Entrepreneurship: Tomáš’s publishing house collaborates with historians, translators, and authors globally, creating a cooperative ecosystem that delivers high-impact books to a niche audience.
  • Relational Branding & Thought Leadership: By sharing his journey on LinkedIn and his blog, Tomáš builds trust as a curator of knowledge, positioning himself as a thought leader in publishing and tech.
  • AI-Augmented Work: His cautious use of AI (e.g., for coding, not writing) reflects meta-management, ensuring technology enhances rather than replaces human creativity.
  • Cognitive Vitality & Longevity: Studying machine learning and using tools like Roam Research for Zettelkasten demonstrate Tomáš’s commitment to neuroplasticity and lifelong learning.
  • Resilient Transitions & Support: Tomáš’s shift from reader to publisher, and now student, showcases resilience. His focus on mental health (e.g., sabbaticals) supports sustainable work.

Why Listen?

Tomáš’s insights will inspire you to think critically about AI, curate knowledge for impact, and embrace learning at any age. Expect practical tips on using tools like Readwise and Roam Research to build your second brain, enhancing your entrepreneurial ventures.

How These Stories Empower You

Kim’s community-driven approach shows how relational capital—built through shared learning and support—transforms transitions.

Tomáš’s curated publishing harnesses external knowledge, from historical texts to AI insights, to drive meta-effective impact.
