The Unpaid Hours That Build a Business

Hello ,

Returning to the Wisepreneurs podcast, LinkedIn expert Sue Ellson reveals the truth about building a solo venture—from the power of relationships to the essential, unpaid work that makes it all possible.

What does it truly take to build a new career on your own terms after 60?
It’s more than just a great idea; it’s a commitment of time, energy, and resilience. Sue Ellson joined me for a candid conversation about the realities of the "Geekster" lifestyle—for experienced professionals using their wisdom to build independent careers.

We go beyond just networking to discuss the unseen, non-billable hours required to build a business and why strong relationships are your most valuable asset in this journey.

Answering Your Biggest Questions

In Episode #72, out this Friday, July 4, 2025, Sue Ellson offers a masterclass in resilient transitions, support, and networked entrepreneurship. We dive into some of the practical questions you should consider before making the leap to a solo venture:

  • How much should you spend to start a business? Sue’s answer might surprise you and save you thousands of dollars.
  • Should you get a part-time "job for now"? We discuss why taking on temporary work can be a sensible move to build your confidence and business without the immediate financial pressure.
  • How much of your week is actually unpaid work? Sue gives an honest look at the significant time commitment required for non-billable tasks, revealing it’s "not for the fainthearted."

Sue’s key message is that success comes from sensibly investing your time in the relationships and systems that support your business long term.

Practical Business Takeaways from Sue:

Beyond networking, Sue shared several crucial lessons for anyone starting their independent journey:

  • Consider a "Job for Now": To ease the financial and psychological pressure, Sue suggests finding part-time or temporary work. This provides a steady income and allows you to build your business at a sustainable pace.
  • Keep Your Costs Low: You don't need a $20,000 website to start. Sue's advice is to begin with the essentials you can manage yourself, like a strong LinkedIn profile, and only invest in new tools once your business starts generating income
  • Find Your Support System: The transition from a structured job to working for yourself is a massive psychological shift. Sue advises finding a mentor or an accountability partner—someone who can offer guidance when you feel overwhelmed.

Your Playbook for Independent Success

My latest article, the "Wisepreneur’s Playbook," is a guide for professionals over 60 moving beyond theory into practical know-how. Learn how to cultivate a "professional mindset," build a resilient "career moat" with your unique expertise, and master the practical business skills—from pricing your value to negotiating with confidence—that turn your wisdom into a sustainable venture.

The motivation behind this article stems from a soon-to-be-released podcast interview I had with Robert Vlach, author of The Freelance Way. Robert was also a guest on episode #38, "Robert Vlach: Freelance Pricing and Financial Mastery."

Upcoming on the Podcast

Sönke Ahrens: Author of How To Take Smart Notes. If you are an Independent Professional, you need to be able to share your insights and build your thought leadership. We'll discuss how organising and using your notes becomes an essential tool in your marketing toolkit.

The book has sold over 500,000 copies, has been translated into more than 20 languages, and offers practical, science-based tools to help individuals stop putting off important tasks and lead more fulfilled lives.
